Kenny couldn't just send some nice picture frames

So what do you get the NFL superstar friend who has everything for his fifth wedding anniversary? (And don't you cynical Colts fans say "a Super Bowl ring," either.)

Peyton Manning was in Nashville Friday for his fifth wedding anniversary to college sweetheart Ashley, and he gave her quite the surprise.

Seems Peyton's buddy Kenny Chesney sang his hit Me and You for the couple's wedding March 17, 2001, and Peyton asked Kenny to reprise that moment Friday at a fancy-shmancy Nashville restaurant.

But Kenny was out of town, rehearsing at a big arena-type place for the upcoming tour that may be his biggest yet. (He's even playing the Coliseum here in town, ya know. The tix for July 8 show here go on sale at 10 a.m. April 1.)

Being out of town didn't stop Kenny from being part of the anniversary celebration. He hopped a plane and flew back here just to sing to Peyton and Ashley — and do a little honky-tonkin' on Lower Broadway afterward.

Kenny told me through a publicist he was happy to do it.

"It seemed like a really romantic thing to do," Kenny said, and then joked, "I can't believe it was coming from Peyton."

Eli and Peyton were also spotted playing some golf at BMCC last week.

Rumors that Peyton suddenly got the yips on the 18th green are unfounded.

That sounds like a modern day "Brokeback" story.

You know Kenny didn't fly in town just to sing to Ashley.

After the dinner, Peyton left with Kenny and Ashley left with the gardener or the milkman.

Wait a second....I thought Peyton and Ashley were divorced?  Hmmmm....

Okay, I'm going to gossip.  We're all family here, right?

I'm from Chattanooga.  Ashley Manning, Peyton's wife and college sweetheart, is orginally from Lookout Mountain, GA, which is a suburb of Chattanooga.   She and Peyton have a huge house on the lake here in Chattanooga, which she lives in.  A friend of mine who is a fixture on the local bar scene sees her out barhopping on a regular basis....and according to him, she certainly isn't acting like she's married....if you catch my drift.   (wink-wink-nudge-nudge....say no more, say no more...)

Now, I never really thought too much about this, because I was told a long time ago that she and Peyton had gotten divorced.   (In fact, I was told that they divorced right before he got the huge contract...and supposedly, she was not at all happy about it, and felt like she'd been hookwinked.)  But if they're still married, then something is a bit fishy.  Or maybe they simply have "an arrangement"...like a don't ask/don't tell policy.

Ashley was with Peyton on the field when his jersey was retired at UT this past season.  Won't forget that dismal game with SC.

NEW YORK--First, there was the 2004 draft, in which Archie Manning asked the San Diego Chargers not to select his son Eli with the first pick. The Chargers were insulted, but shipped young Manning to the Giants anyway. Now the senior Manning has issued a request to all NFL defensemen: Please don’t tackle my son.

“First let me just say that I appreciate the opportunity for my son to play in the NFL,” Manning said during an appearance on Sportscenter. “I know it’s a huge privilege and an honor, and the last thing I would want to do is ruffle feathers or draw undue attention to him. But I would like to request that any and all NFL defensemen refrain from tackling my son. He’s young and fragile, and any kind of physical contact could really hurt his career. Again, I don’t want to disrespect the game, but we really can’t have Eli being tackled at this point. I’m sure you all can understand.”

Manning said the decision to make the request came after days of deliberation, and was not intended to make a mockery of the league. It was designed solely to protect the well being of young Eli.

“This is completely out of character for our family,” said Manning. “We really hate to ask for special treatment because we know what a privilege it is to play football for a living. This was a very, very difficult decision to make and we did not approach it lightly. Simply put, my son can’t be tackled. Look at him. Look at that pretty face. Do you want to be the one to damage that? I don’t think so. So let’s all pull together and make sure Eli doesn’t get tackled. If we can’t get everyone to agree to this, he will sit out the season.”

Reaction from around the league has been mixed. The league’s defensemen are furious with the Mannings, and have vowed to tackle Eli as often as possible.

“Are they kidding? The kid doesn’t want to be tackled? This is football. Everyone gets tackled,” said Eagles defensive end Jevon Kearse. “I’m going to make it a point to beat the living poo out of that kid whenever possible. Hell, I’ll even take a penalty if I have to, just for the sheer joy of putting the pretty boy on his buns--that is, if I can stay healthy long enough to get in a game.”

Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis promised to remove Manning’s head from his body and vomit down his neck, if given the chance.

“Let me put it this way,” said Lewis from his home in Tampa. “When we play the Giants, it will be my mission to destroy him. I will stomp on him, spit on him, and crush his hopes and dreams. In fact, if he survives the game I will be very surprised. Don’t forget people—I’m crazy. I killed someone.”

Though Manning’s message may have been lost on the leagues defensive players, some experts are calling it “sensible” and “fair.” Michael Irvin, ESPN football analyst, believes that players have a right to protect themselves in order to avoid a career ending injury.

“Hey, we all got to make money We all want those endorsements, and any player who denies that is lying,” said Irvin. “Why shouldn’t he be able to exempt himself from being tackled? Why shouldn’t he refuse to be thrown on the ground? If he gets hurt and his career’s in jeopardy, it’ll cost him millions.“

He added: “Anytime a player does something to look after himself, everybody jump all over him like he selfish. I say players have a right to look out for themselves. Actually, I don’t say it, I scream it. I scream everything, even though I have a perfectly good microphone to amplify my voice.”

Despite the criticism from around the league, Archie Manning said his son is willing to sit out the season to avoid being tackled. There are several options open to Eli, including the Canadian Football League and the Arena league, but Manning insisted that his son would much rather play pro football. The only stipulation is exemption from the tackling rule.

“Look, it’s very easy. Just don’t tackle him,” said Manning. “It’s simple. If you get into the backfield, simply stand in front of him and try to bat down the pass.

Nine, I thought the same thing.  I haven't lived in Chattanooga for 3 years now, but when I was there she was out with her landscaper.  Peyton knows the guy, so either he 1) ignores that she's cheating on him 2) he's too dumb to know she is cheating on him 3) they have an arrangement.

Maybe things have changed in the past few years, but that is how it used to be.

During the 2004 season, I was out with some friends, watching MNF at a local restaurant.  One of them pointed out Ashley, sitting at another table with another girl and two guys.  "Hey, there's Peyton Manning's wife."  And I've gotta tell ya, they sure didn't look like a bunch of friends just hanging out...I got the distinct impression that it was two couples getting together for a drink.  They all left together, so who knows what happened from there, but I'll say this much....if my wife walked in and saw me in a similar situation, I'd have a whooooole lot of explaining to do.  (And those explanations would likely be offered from a face very much like Otter's face after his hotel room encounter with Greggie, Neidermeier, and the rest of the Hitler Youth.)

I did not realize that Peyton Manning was married.  Has anyone ever seen a picture of his wife?

• Where did Kenny Chesney serenade his NFL star buddy Peyton Manning and Peyton's wife for the couple's fifth anniversary over the weekend? It was Mario's, where Peyton also dropped BIG bucks on fancy wine and champagne.

First of all you guys are so dumb. Ashley Manning is from Memphis, TN. Born and raised there. Peyton and Ashley do not have a second home in Chattanooga. Since you are trying to act like you know something about Ashley Manning maybe you should have looked into her first. Second, she owns her own real estate company in Indy and works for that all the time and is very involved in Pey-back foundation. Nice try though, really you are pathetic. I honestly have seen Peyton and Ashley together and they are very much in love and look like they don't have a care inthe world besides each other when they are together.

The marriage is probably a front to camouflage Peyton's gayness.

Wow....way to dredge up a dead thread from a year ago.

I don't know any member of the Manning family personally...my knowledge (or lack thereof) is strictly hearsay, and would be inadmissible in a court of law.

But I know a number of people who would take exception to your assertion, based on their own experiences.   I know people who have run into Peyton on the golf course, at small "locals-only" type restaurants, at the mall....Peyton's summer barbecue bash is quite well-known among the lake crowd here in Chattanooga.  (Peyton's house is on the lake).  He was also involved in the development of Thunder Farms, an exclusive housing development just outside Chattanooga.  (To what extent, I don't know.....I just know that his name was attached to the project from the very beginning;  I suspect he was probably brought in primarily as a high-profile personality to attract buyers.)

Seems like an awful lot of involvement for a guy who has no connection to Chattanooga.
